What IDDSI Means for Home Care
IDDSI (International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative) is the global standard for safe food and fluid textures. Here is a simplified guide by severity — always confirm the right level with a speech therapist.
Soft & Bite-Sized / Regular
Severity: Mild
Mild or no swallowing difficulty. Food requires minimal modification — soft pieces that can be mashed with tongue.
Minced & Moist / Minced
Severity: Moderate
Moderate difficulty. Food is minced to small, moist pieces. No hard lumps. Suitable for those who struggle with chewing.
Liquidised
Severity: Significant
Significant difficulty. Food is smooth and pourable but holds its shape. No lumps, skins, or seeds.
Thin / Mildly Thick / Moderately Thick Fluids
Severity: Severe
Severe swallowing difficulty. Fluids are thickened to reduce aspiration risk. Level selected by speech therapist.
Use the IDDSI Matcher tool below for personalised level guidance, then confirm with your speech therapist or dietitian.
