Frequently asked questions

Dysphagia is difficulty moving food or liquid from the mouth to the stomach. It's common after stroke, with Parkinson's disease, dementia, and following head and neck cancer treatment. About 8% of the global population is affected, rising to 15-30% among adults over 65. Without proper management it can lead to aspiration pneumonia, malnutrition, and dehydration.

Clear Thickener is straightforward: add the recommended amount to your drink (water, tea, juice, soup), stir briskly for about 30 seconds with a whisk or fork until fully dissolved, then let it stand for 1-2 minutes to reach the target consistency. The packaging includes dosing tables for each IDDSI level (1 "slightly thick" to 4 "extremely thick"). Clear Thickener is colourless and flavour-neutral, so it doesn't change the taste or appearance of the drink.

All of our products follow the IDDSI (International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative) framework — the unified food-texture classification system used by clinicians worldwide. We also co-author care food group standards for the Greater Bay Area (T/SATA 084-2025 and T/SATA 085-2025) and hold multiple food safety certifications. Products are developed at Hong Kong Science Park and developed in partnership with clinical teams at hospitals across Hong Kong and the mainland.

Eldercare homes can order in three ways: 1) message our consultancy team on WhatsApp; 2) email info@seniordeli.com; or 3) submit the website contact form. We offer free samples, professional training, and IDDSI compliance documentation. Bulk orders qualify for preferential pricing and scheduled delivery. New partner homes can request a free on-site product demo and staff training session.

Our four product lines cover IDDSI levels 1 to 7. Clear Thickener works at levels 1-4 (slightly thick to extremely thick) for adjusting drink consistency. Food Gellant works at levels 3-5 for moulding liquid foods into shapes. Cold Gellant works at levels 4-5 for cold dishes and desserts. Food Softener works at level 5+ to soften solids while preserving their look. Choose the right product with guidance from a speech therapist or dietitian.

Absolutely. Our products are sold to both institutions and family caregivers. Caregivers can order through our website, WhatsApp, or partner retailers. We provide detailed usage guides, recipes, and one-on-one WhatsApp support to help you prepare safe, tasty soft meals at home. We recommend consulting a healthcare professional first to confirm the right IDDSI level.

All SeniorDeli products are developed and tested against the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) framework. Our range covers IDDSI Levels 1–7. We are also a Participating Drafting Unit of T/SATA 094-2025 — the Greater Bay Area dysphagia food group standard published in September 2025 — and co-authors of T/SATA 084-2025 and T/SATA 085-2025.

SeniorDeli products are food products, not medical devices. They do not diagnose, treat, or prevent disease. They help people with dysphagia eat more safely and enjoyably. If you have medical concerns, always consult your doctor or speech-language pathologist.

Thickener (凝固粉) makes liquids — water, tea, juice, soup — thicker to prevent aspiration. Food Softener (軟化粉) makes solid foods — meat, vegetables, rice — softer for elderly with reduced chewing ability. They are complementary products, not substitutes.

Our thickener is taste-neutral and does not alter the flavour of beverages. A low-sugar variant is available for diabetic users. Products are free of common allergens (peanuts, dairy, shellfish), halal-friendly, and vegetarian-friendly. Always review the ingredient list for individual sensitivities.

SeniorDeli offers a free mobile app for iOS and Android, designed for caregivers and care home staff. Key features include: EAT-10 swallowing self-screening questionnaire, IDDSI Level Matcher (a 5-question wizard to find the right texture level), Snap-to-IDDSI AI photo classification (photograph a meal to estimate its IDDSI level), Recipe of the Day (IDDSI-tailored recipes), Caregiver Tip of the Day, and compliance document downloads. Download it at seniordeli.com/app.

IDDSI (International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative) is a globally agreed set of 8 levels (0–7) for classifying food texture and drink thickness for people with dysphagia. Level 0 is thin liquid (like water); Level 7 is regular food with no restriction. The framework provides a common language for clinicians, caregivers, and food manufacturers worldwide. All SeniorDeli products are designed, tested, and labelled according to this framework.

Yes. SeniorDeli actively serves Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and the wider Greater Bay Area (GBA). We have offices in Hong Kong Science Park, Qianhai (Shenzhen), and Nansha (Guangzhou). We co-authored T/SATA 094-2025, the GBA dysphagia food group standard published in September 2025, and work with 200+ care homes and hospitals across the region.

Snap-to-IDDSI is SeniorDeli's AI-powered food photo classification feature in the app. A caregiver photographs a meal and the AI — using the Qwen-VL-Max vision model — instantly estimates the IDDSI texture level and provides preparation guidance. It is intended for educational reference only and is not a substitute for clinical swallowing assessment by a speech-language therapist.

SeniorDeli is partnering with LinguaLeap, an AI health tech startup, to explore swallowing assessment hardware. LinguaLeap is an independent company — it is a technology partner, not a SeniorDeli product or subsidiary. This collaboration is part of SeniorDeli's broader mission to bring evidence-based tools to the dysphagia care ecosystem.

Yes. SeniorDeli is a registered social enterprise focused on improving quality of life for elderly people with dysphagia. We serve 200+ institutional clients including care homes, hospitals, and rehabilitation centres across Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. Our mission is to use food technology to ensure that people with swallowing difficulties can eat safely, with dignity and enjoyment.

EAT-10 (Eating Assessment Tool-10) is a validated 10-item self-screening questionnaire for detecting swallowing difficulty. Each item is scored 0–4; a total score of 3 or higher suggests risk of swallowing difficulty and recommends consultation with a speech-language therapist. SeniorDeli's free app includes an EAT-10 self-check tool to help caregivers identify early warning signs.

SeniorDeli products comply with the IDDSI 2019 framework and food safety regulations. We are a Participating Drafting Unit of T/SATA 094-2025, the Greater Bay Area dysphagia food standard. Products are developed at Hong Kong Science Park in collaboration with clinical research teams. They are halal-friendly, vegetarian-friendly, and free of common allergens including peanuts, dairy, and shellfish.
