Snap-to-IDDSI: Instant IDDSI Classification from a Photo
Point your camera at any dish — clinical-AI vision analyses the texture and returns the IDDSI level with step-by-step reasoning. Built for frontline caregivers, validated by HKU Swallowing Research Laboratory. The actual tool lives at /assessment.
What is Snap-to-IDDSI?
Snap-to-IDDSI is a clinical-AI vision tool that classifies any food item against the IDDSI (International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative) 8-level framework from a single photograph. It returns the predicted IDDSI level alongside the reasoning — colour, visible texture, cohesion cues — so a caregiver can review and confirm at a glance. Developed by SeniorDeli (康樂齡) in collaboration with Karen Chan at HKU Swallowing Research Laboratory.
How it works — 4 steps
1. Snap
Take a clear photo of the prepared food in natural or kitchen lighting. No specialist equipment needed — any smartphone camera works.
2. Upload
Open the assessment tool at /assessment and upload the photo. The image is processed securely; no photo is stored after the analysis completes.
3. AI classifies
The clinical-AI vision model analyses colour, visible texture cues, particle size, and cohesion indicators against IDDSI Level descriptors (Levels 3–7 for foods, 0–4 for drinks) and returns a predicted level.
4. Review reasoning
The tool displays the predicted IDDSI level together with a plain-language explanation of why that level was assigned. Review, confirm with your care team, and log the result for audit trail purposes.
Why Snap-to-IDDSI matters
- Faster triage than fork-drip testing during busy RCHE meal shifts — a first-pass visual check in seconds, not minutes.
- Multilingual output: English, Cantonese (廣東話), Mandarin (普通話), Japanese (日本語), Tagalog, Bahasa Indonesia, and Vietnamese — meeting the language needs of Hong Kong's diverse care workforce.
- Audit-trail-ready: each classification result can be saved with timestamp and staff ID, supporting ISO 11000 RCHE documentation requirements.
⚠ Triage tool, not medical diagnosis. Snap-to-IDDSI is an assistive screening tool. Always confirm IDDSI classification with a qualified speech therapist or clinician for patients with dysphagia or swallowing disorders.
